THE ISLAMIC HORIZON SERIES 6

1. Prophet Adam (PBUH) - Company of a mate:

After Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala banished Shaitaan (Satan) from His presence, He left Prophet Adam to dwell in the heavens. One day, while Prophet Adam (PBUH) slept, Allah Aliy- ul-Azim created Hazrat Hawwa from his left rib. (While the Bible mentions that Eve {Hazrat Hawwa}was made from the thirteenth rib on Prophet Adam's left side, the Holy Quran is silent on these details).

"O mankind! Revere your Guardian-Lord, Who created you from a single person, created of like nature his mate." 4:Al-Nisa':1

'It is He who created you from a single person and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her (in love).' 7:Al-A'raf:189

Muhammad ibn Ishaaq and Ibn Abbass (RAA) relate that Hawwa was created from the shortest left rib of Hazrat Adam (PBUH) while he was sleeping, and after a while she was clothed with flesh. In another tradition it is noted that the angels asked him her name and Prophet Adam (PBUH) replied:
"Hawwa." They asked: "Why did you call her Hawwa?" Prophet Adam (PBUH) said: "Because she was created of me, and I am a living being." (The root of the word "Hawwa" means living things.)
Abu Hurairah (RAA) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "O Muslims! I advise you to be gentle with women, for they are created from a rib, and the most crooked portion of the rib is its upper part. If you try to straighten it, it will break, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so I urge you to take care of the women." Sahih Bukhari

2. Heavenly abode and caution:

'We said: "O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden; and eat of the beautiful things therein as (where and when) ye will; but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression."' 2:Al-Baqarah:35

The reference to Al-Jannah in this ayah is generally interpreted to mean a domain in the heavens. As for the identity of the prohibited tree, there are various suggestions, including wheat, fig, grapes, hyacinth etc,. However, it is better not to yield to conjecture in this matter since it has not been expounded in either Quran or Ahadith.

3. Deception and expulsion from heavens:

Prophet Adam and Hazrat Hawwa (PBUT) had been warned of eating from the forbidden tree, as well as of Iblis' everlasting enmity. Being human, however, they succumbed to Iblis' deceit through the human frailties of ambition and forgetfulness. Iblis sensed these vulnerabilities and plotted to exploit them by whispering to the couple that the fruit of the prohibited tree, in fact, held the powers of immortality and eternal kingdom.

'Then began Satan to whisper suggestion to them, in order to reveal to them their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree lest you should become angels or such beings as live forever."' 7:Al-A'raaf:20

They were taken in by his swearing upon Allah's name, failing to imagine anyone who might dare utter such lies. They also forgot that having been elevated to the position where the angels bowed to them it could hardly be a jump in status for them in becoming an angel. According to a hadith in Ibn Abi Hatim, as soon as they tasted the forbidden fruit the heavenly dress slipped off. In confusion, they ran about and tried to cover themselves with tree leaves. Allah Azza wa Jall addressed them next:

'We said: "Get ye down, all (ye people), with enmity between yourselves, on earth will be your dwelling place and your means of livelihood - for a time"' 2:Al-Baqarah:36

In this manner all three, Prophet Adam, Hazrat Hawwa (PBUT) and Shaitaan Al-Rajeem were evicted from heavens. It is important to realise that, unlike the Biblical version, the blame has not been placed entirely on Eve (Hazrat Hawwa). In fact, Quran mentions; "O ye Children of Adam! Let not Satan seduce you in the same manner as He got your parents out of the garden, stripping of their raiment, to expose their shame." 7:Al-A'raaf:27

From these verses it is evident that there is no single person to be blamed and Allah considered both Adam and Hawwa (PBUT) to have succumbed to Satan's trap.

7. Great Sins:

Narrated Hazrat Abu Huraira (RAA): The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." The People enquired, " O Allah's Messenger (SAW)! What are they?" He said,
"(1) To join others in worship alongwith Allah,
(2) to practice sorcery,
(3) to kill a person which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause,
(4) to eat up Riba (usury, i.e., interest),
(5) to eat up an orphan's wealth.
(6) to show ones back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting,
(7) and to accuse chaste women, who never think of anything touching their chastity and are true believers". Sahih Al-Bukhari

8. Staying in the land of Shirk:

Narrated Sumurah bin Jundub (RAA): "Allah's Messenger (SAW) said: Anybody (from amongst the Muslims) who meets, gathers together, lives and stays (permanently) with a Mushrik (polytheist or a disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah) and agrees to his ways, opinions and (enjoys) his living with him (Mushirk) then he (that Muslim) is like him (Mushirk). (This Hadith indicates that a Muslim should not stay with a non-Muslim country, he must emigrate to a Muslim country, where Islam is practised.)." ( Abu Dawood)

Division in Ummah:

It has been narrated by Abu Hurairah(RAA) that the Prophet (SAW) said: "The Jews and Christians were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two religious sects, and this nation will be divided into seventy-three religious sects-all in Hell, except one, and that one is: The one on which I and my Companions are today [i.e. following the Quran and the Prophet's Sunnah(legal ways, orders, acts of worship and statements of the Prophet (SAW)." Al-Tirimidhi, Abu Dawood

Muslim Brothers and Sisters, spreading of Islam is a responsibility placed upon all of us. In Quran, Allah commands: 'Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong.' Al-Imran:104.

Allah also instructed Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as follows; 'O Messenger! Proclaim the (Message) which hath been sent to thee from thy Lord.' 5:Al-Maidah:67 As his Ummah, we share this burden. Kindly forward these writings on Islam to whomsoever you may. May Allah Kareem accept our insignificant efforts. Aameen.
